I had the privilege to know Miss Thurston and Mrs Deffee. I lived across the road from them when I was a boy. I remember them teaching me to spin wool on an ancient spinning wheel, then using it to weave on weaving looms. I remember having to pull various levers to change the patterns. The ladies used to hold public exhibitions in their house and I used to demonstrate spinning and weaving for them. Miss Thurston loved that as a boy, I took interest in spinning and weaving and told me many times to be proud of the skills she taught me. What a lovely lady she was; I never realised at the time what a fantastic woman she was and what she'd accomplished in her life. I feel so proud, and honoured, to have met her.
