Dr Zachary Belling Mudge was a medical doctor in Hayle for many years, until he retired in 1932. He lived with his wife, Florence, at The Retreat in Hayle, along with three members of staff, and it is here that Florence died in 1934, two years after her husband had retired. It seems the couple did not have children.
Dr Mudge was born in Hayle, the son of a medical doctor, and practised in the early part of his career with his father, and later with his brother, Dr Thomas Mudge, also in Hayle.
Zachary lived first with his parents, and after their deaths with his older siblings, at Railway Villas in West Phillack, until he married Florence, 18 years his junior, in 1903. Dr Zachary Mudge had close associations with Phillack church, and fulfilled the role of Churchwarden there for many years, and is also noted as one of the vice-presidents of the Hayle Model Yacht club in 1908. His sister, Miss Lizzie Mudge, also lived in Hayle.
He was aged 76 when he passed away, and his funeral was well attended. A local press-clipping reflects on his extensive contribution to the local community through his professional and personal roles, including involvement with the local model-yachting club (who used the Hayle basin for their meets) and as a churchwarden here at Phillack.
We can deliver flowers, or another token of remembrance, to the resting place of Florence and Zachary Mudge on your behalf:
